Strength looks different for everyone. For some, it begins after competitive sports. For others, it becomes essential later in life to protect mobility, joint health, and independence. Through RX: Strength, we highlight how strength training supports health at every stage, and how consistency and support matter more than where you start.

For Ben, sports were a major part of growing up. When that chapter ended after high school, he searched for something that would keep him motivated and healthy. Strength training became his foundation.
At the Wellness Center, Ben found space to train consistently and challenge himself through the fitness floor and structured strength options. Access to equipment, guidance when needed, and the ability to build routine helped support his long-term health and confidence.
Ben’s experience reflects how strength training can evolve beyond competition, supporting overall health and consistency at any age.
Strength Support at BMC Wellness
RX: Strength at BMC Wellness is supported through a variety of options designed for all ages and experience levels. Members can build strength through open fitness floor access, personal training, small group training, senior strength classes, and youth-focused strength opportunities.
Our fitness spaces are designed to support safe movement and confidence at every stage. Personal training provides one-on-one guidance and accountability for those who want individualized support. Fundamentals: Strength and Conditioning offers an open gym floor experience for teens to learn proper form, safe movement patterns, and strong training habits in a structured and supportive environment.
Across all strength opportunities, the focus remains the same. Proper technique, consistency, and long-term health.

Strength for Healthy Aging

For many seniors, strength training is less about performance and more about preserving quality of life. Michael Mack joined BMC Wellness Center after dealing with a shoulder tear and arthritis. Wanting to avoid surgery, he spoke with his doctor and was encouraged to keep moving safely. A recommendation from his brother led him to the Wellness Center.
Through Robin Birchfield’s Senior Men’s Strength class and regular access to the Wellness Center, Michael focused on safe, consistent movement to improve shoulder mobility and reduce discomfort.
“It was not an overnight success, but it took consistency and effort on my part.”
Over time, strength training helped him regain range of motion, rebuild confidence in daily activities, and stay active without pain. Just as important, encouragement and laughter became part of the journey during class.

Why RX: Strength Matters
Strength training plays a critical role in maintaining bone density and joint health throughout life. As muscles grow stronger, they provide greater support to the joints, helping absorb impact and reduce unnecessary strain during everyday movement. This added stability can ease discomfort, improve range of motion, and support safer movement patterns over time. Strength training also helps preserve balance and posture by reinforcing the muscles responsible for stability and coordination, which becomes increasingly important as we age. When performed consistently and progressed safely, strength training supports long-term mobility, independence, and confidence in how the body moves day to day.
